Euro Updates: Haber, DeGuzman and McCallum – Oh My!
Edit: Marcus Haber will be spending the season on loan to Scottish Premier League side St Johnstone. As noted in the Voyageurs’ thread on the move, Haber will have to fight for minutes considering St Johnstone already have six strikers under contract.
Just a few notes to see how our boys (and one other guy) abroad have been faring, plus an unintentionally hilarious headline – hooray!
- Marcus Haber has been enjoying a little run-in with the West Brom first team in pre-season. The former Vancouver Whitecap has seen 45 minutes in each of the Baggies’ last two senior friendlies, usually employed as a lone striker. While not knocking anyone’s socks off, the reviews from England suggest that Haber is faring reasonably well. He’ll need to really up his game in a hurry to have a shot at the first team come the start of the EPL season, but all this playing time could mean Haber will be an attractive loan target for a couple of Championship clubs.
- Gavin McCallum‘s transfer ballyhoo has been sorted out between Hereford and Lincoln City. Although McCallum moved to Lincoln on a free transfer, because he is under 24 and was offered a new contract, Hereford are entitled to some compensation. The whole squabble was set for a tribunal, but it’s been settled for some amount that we’re not supposed to know. So there you go.
- David Edgar is getting some positive attention at Burnley, and things look good for his chances of staying with the big club this season. Interestingly, it’s not in his traditional role as a central defender: Edgar has been used as a holding midfielder in preseason. This is promising stuff for the Kitchener, Ont., native, who’s been struggling to find regular playing time in the past few years. Maybe adding another position to his toolkit will win him a place in Burnley’s squad for the upcoming Championship season.
- Jonathan De Guzman – and I know that he’s the boogeyman, but bear with me – has moved from Feyenoord to Mallorca in sunny, sunny Spain on a free transfer. This is, it must be said, a step down in class, and it’s outside of the Netherlands – so could this signal an end to JDG2′s hopes of breaking into the Dutch senior squad? He’s followed his brother’s footsteps to Spain – could he follow them to the Canadian side? Tell us what you think.
- Rob Friend …well I don’t have any news about our man in Berlin (mostly because I don’t read German), but this headline is pretty funny if you read it the right way: www.kearneyhub.com/news/local/article_1ac8e190-9728-11df-91e3-001cc4c002e0.html

Dammit, Bobbo – someone’s going to hear you!

Whoa… this may be a “Euro update” but I think you’ve still given short shrift to the fact that Tyler Hemming is now the newest member of the Austin Aztex. http://www.austinaztex.com/news/headlines/index.html?article_id=394

You’re right, Grant, that isn’t a Euro update.
Also: I’ll short you in the shrift if you’re not careful.

Good luck with that. I’m pretty sure his shrift got shorted a LONG time ago.

Thanks for the Rob Friend headline, it entertained me during the Motagua game.

Oh that headline is GOLD!

finally, i made it to this thread!
Haber I wasnt too impressed with him when I saw him with the Whitecaps this summer. I thought why would West Brom want to sign this guy? But I will say that he is comparable to Rob Friend in playing style.
