Teenage girls doing something more productive than hanging out with Bono.
Alright, I’m not going to pretend that I knew the first-ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup was going on right now. Nor am I going to pretend that it represents anything other than an attempt by FIFA executives to create another money-making tournament that gives them an opportunity to curry favour with various nations by granting them hosting duties. But it is nice to see a bit of good news on the national scene, so here’s to our girls, who scored a 1-0 victory over the host Kiwis today, before a crowd of 13,123 (which, if you’re counting, is slightly more than the turnout in Montreal to see the MNT face Honduras last month). Montreal’s Rachel Lamarre potted the first goal in the history of the tournament, and the victory has Canada sitting alone atop the entire 16-team field (I imagine that once the other teams play their first matches this will change, but hey, enjoy it while it lasts).
Just think — some day, one of these young ladies could be the one publicly shit-talking the men’s program at the worst possible moment. The U-17 Women’s World Cup: where dreams are made.
